What is Misdiagnosis?

Misdiagnosis occurs when a healthcare professional views a patient’s symptoms of illness or injury, considers the evidence against his knowledge and education, and arrives at the wrong conclusion about the name or cause of the illness or injury.

Misdiagnosis can be:

1. The incorrect name is given to the child’s condition, therefore incorrect treatment follows.

2. The parent is told nothing is really wrong even though symptoms show otherwise, so problems and symptoms worsen and become harder to treat.

3. The parent is told there is a problem, but there is no real illness, so child receives unnecessary treatment for a non-existent condition.

The incorrect conclusion my have stemmed from a flawed medical test, lack of knowledge on the part of the doctor, or even inadequate information provided by the patient.

Misdiagnosis occurs much more frequently than most parents realize. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality states that between 10 and 30 percent of all diagnoses in the US are incorrect. Other experts put that rate a lot closer to 40%.

What do we mean by Symptoms?

A simple Google search of symptom will give you an accurate definition: “A physical or mental feature that is regarded as indicating a condition of disease, particularly such a feature that is apparent to the patient.”

Now, at KidsMisdiagnosed.org we are, of course, concerned with symptoms, but not just treating them. By symptom, we do not just mean a headache, itchy throat or skin rash. We mean that a sore throat or a rash is a symptom of some imbalance in the body or emotional state due to internal or external stresses and the treatment of THAT imbalance will eradicate the symptoms.

Our slogan, “Finding Causes, Not Just Treating Symptoms,” says a lot. In our current society there is a staggering amount of misdiagnosis coupled with powerful medications, usually with unwanted side effects. If we can become more educated and change our viewpoints toward finding the actual cause or causes of these symptoms, we can nip these health problems in the bud the first time, not being led down the wrong path and allowing the illness to worsen.

To this educative end, we have provided a constantly growing forum  and will continue to feature articles written by professionals in the healthcare field.
